Dorothy was born January 5, 1923 in Cambridge, Iowa to Tollen and Ella Engen. On February 4, 1946 she married the one and only love of her life, Russell, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, Iowa.
Dorothy was a lifelong resident of Cambridge, Iowa where she was an active member of Nazareth Lutheran Church. She was employed by R.H. Donnelly in Nevada and after retirement a cook at Cambridge Elementary School.
Dorothy was an avid walker-five miles a day and was still mowing her yard at 86. She also treated us all to her fantastic pies (especially chocolate) and baked goods.
Dorothy is survived by three children, Dee (Don) Miller of Johnston, Rita (Len) Hilgenberg of Forest City and Rick (Mary Lou) of Cambridge; five grandchildren, Curt (Sarah) Miller of Ankeny, Julie Nitchie of Johnston, Ryan (Callen Monson)Hilgenberg of Ventura, Aaron (Stacy) Denton of Maxwell, Angy Denton of Indianola; brother, Roger (Grace) Engen of Ames and fourteen great grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Russell; granddaughter, Amy O’Tool; four sisters, Thelma Sams, Mildred Fitch, Wilma Kaltenheuser, Alvina McHone and two infant siblings.
Dorothy was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. We will all miss her love, her smile and her selfless willingness to help any way she could. May God bless her and her memory.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for distribution to Sunny View Care Center.
