Last Rites For Maude Ballou, 79, Held Here Friday

Funeral services for Miss Maude Ballou, 79, who passed away on Saturday, April 23 at the home of her brother-in-law and sister, Rev. and Mrs. F. W. Bruins in Malta, Montana were held Friday afternoon at the Morfoot Funeral Homes in Nevada with Rev. O. E. Cooley of the Nevada Methodis church officiating.

Mr. Lee Lowenberg sang "Abide With Me" and "Blest Be the Tie." Mrs. Norman C. Dobson was at the piano. Many beautiful flowers surrounded the bier.

The casket bearers were from the Nevada Chapter of the O.E.S. and included John McNerney, Carl E. Stone, H. E. Hadley, James Woodruff, Wm. Post and Harry Sherk.

Committal was in the family lot in the Nevada cemetery.

Born in Nevada

Miss Ballou was born in Nevada, October 11, 1869 a daughter of V. A. Ballou publisher of the Nevada Watchman, and Armetta Ballou. She attended the Nevada schools, graduating with the class of 1887.

Miss Ballou followed her high school graduation with attendance at and graduation from the Capital City Commercial college in Des Moines, after which she taught Penmanship and Drawing in the Nevada schools.

She taught in the Boyles Business college in Omaha, Neb. and in a Chicago Business school for a time.

On the death of her mother Maude returned to Nevada to take charge of the home until her sister Ruth was through high school. During that time she was bookkeeper and accountant in the Ambrose store and in the D. M. Grove Insurance office.

First Worthy Matron

Miss Ballou retained a lifetime interest in Art. She was the first Worthy Matron of the Nevada Chapter 296, Order of the Eastern Star, was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a longtime member of the Nevada Sirosis Club and was a member of the Nevada Methodist church. During the last rites members of these organizations were seated in a body.

For a number of years she had spent her winters in Montana and the remainder of the year in Nevada.

For the past two and a half years she had been at the Bruins home in Malta, Montana where she passed away last Saturday following a stroke which she suffered on the previous Wednesday.

Mrs. Bruins, the former Miss Ruth Ballou, accompanied the remains from Montana. She was met here by her son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. John T. Calhoun, and her son and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Rajer Bruins, of Wichita, Kansas.

Preceding the deceased in death were her parents, Mr. and Mrs. V. A. Ballou, her sister, Miss Edith Ballou who died in 1924 and her brother Victor Ballou who passed away in 1912.
