Beloved Colo Woman Is Dead, Final Rites Tuesday

Funeral services for the late Mrs. J. R. Hopkins, who passed away at her home in Colo Sunday morning at 4:00 a. m., will be held from St. Mary's church in Colo Tuesday morning at 10:00 a. m. with her pastor, the Reverend James D. Mahoney, in charge of the services. Burial will be in the St. James cemetery in Colo.

The body, which had been at the Morfoot mortuary was taken to the home today where it will like in state until the funeral hour Tuesday morning. The Rosary service will be held at the home in Colo tonight at 8:00 p. m.

The death of this widely known and much loved Colo resident followed an invalidism of nearly a year which was due to a fall she suffered March 11, 1943, and from which she never fully recovered.

Following her injury, which had occurred when she was in Nevada on a business trip, Mrs. Hopkins was taken to the Mary Greeley hospital in Ames where she was a patient for several months. She was later taken to her home in Colo and while during the entire period of illness she had the best of care, she was for the greater share of the time confined to her bed.

The deceased was born Feb. 10, 1869, in Ogle county, Ill., a daughter of Michael and Mary Conlon Coady.

She came to Story county in 1874 with her parents who settled on a farm north of Colo. She attended the Colo schools and attended and graduated from Iowa State Teachers' college at Cedar Falls.

She taught in several of the Story county schools and for a number of years was on the faculty of the Colo Schools. She was married Jan. 1, 1892 to James R. Hopkins and went immediately to the farm home one mile north and one mile west of Colo which he husband had in readiness for his bride.

Mrs. Hopkins made her home upon the farm until after the death of her husband in July of 1931 when she moved to Colo, and established her home.

Mrs. Hopkins was a woman of an unusually fine mind. She was ever alert to civic affairs in her community and elsewhere and was a faithful member of St. Mary's church in Colo and one of its substantial donors. Friendly and kindly herself she had a host of friends, who with her relatives will long cherish her memory.

She is survived by one brother, George Coady of Lake City. The brother John Coady and the sister, Mrs. Catherine Foley have both preceded her in death. She is also survived by a number of nephews and nieces, all of whom have done all possible to add to her comfort and to brighten the many days of her invalidism.
