Funeral of K. O. Lura, McCallsburg Pioneer

Special to the Journal.
McCallsburg, Oct 3--The funeral of Knudt O. Lura was held Wednesday afternoon at the Lutheran church with Rev. Paulsrud, an old friend of the family officiating. The church was filled with friends who came to pay their last respects to an old neighbor and friend.

Knudt O. Lura was born near Sandness, Norway, Dec. 9, 1848 and died at Iowa sanitarium Nevada, September 25, 1927 after four weeks illness, being 78 years, 9 months and 16 days of age.

Mr. Lura came to America in 1870 locating in Chicago, where on February 9, 1871, he was united in marriage the Bergithe Larson. To this union were born thirteen children, all of whom are living and were present at their father's funeral.

In 1876 Mr. and Mrs. Lura and three children came to Roland, in Story county where they lived three years, when they moved onto a farm north of McCallsburg where they spent over forty years.

Mr. and Mrs. Lura retired from the farm a few years ago when they moved to McCallsburg. Since the death of his wife two years ago in October Mr. Lura had been very lonesome and restless and his health began to fail. The first year he spent among his children, then he built himself and little home in town and had lived alone since. He was taken ill about four weeks ago and was cared for at home until the last week when he was taken to the sanitarium for treatments, some of the family were with him there most of the time.

Rev. Paulsrud had charge of the service while the music was furnished by Miss Lillie Alsager who sang "Abide With Me" and Mr. Ranheim sang a solo "Kun et Skridt" ("Just One Step" in the Norwegian language, the same song he sang two years ago at Mrs. Lura's funeral. Mr. Lura was carried to his last resting place by the sons who acted as pallbearers.

Burial was in the Warren township cemetery.

The thirteen children are: Mrs. A. C. Hanson, Lewis Lura, Mrs. George Vallem and Peter Lura of this place; Mrs. M. C. Hanson, Clarksfield, Minn.; Mrs. Inger Vickra, Radcliffe; Mrs. Ole Ness, Lake Mills, Iowa; Corneil and Paul Lura of Thompson, Iowa; Martin Lura of Garden City; Carl Lura, Zearing; Arthur and Otis Lura of Marshalltown, who with husbands and wives were all present at the funeral, as were several grand children and other relatives.

Besides the thirteen children, Mr. Lura is survived by two brothers and two sisters, 55 grand children and 21 great grand children.
