From Story County Aegis October 4, 1867 (page 3)

FATAL ACCIDENT.--It is our melancholy duty to chronical the death on Saturday last of Mr. Bucannon, a young man of 18 or 19 and the only son of his widowed mother, from the accidental discharge of a shot-gun in his own hands. The family, which is composed in addition to those mentioned of a helpless daughter some twenty years of age and a small child were a party of emigrants from Bureau county, Ill., to this county, and had arrived within a few miles of this place, their destination, when the young man took his gun to shoot at prairie chickens along the road and on returning to his wagon, having neglected to uncock his piece, received that charge immediately behind his ear, blowing off a piece of the skull and killing him instantly.
