Ronald Dean Meals, 82, of Nevada, passed away Thursday, August 23, 2018, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, in Iowa City, surrounded by his family. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, August 28, at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday, August 29, also at the funeral home, with Pastor David Burling officiating. Burial will follow at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery in Nevada.

Ron was born in Lake View on February 14, 1936, the son of Chester and Ermil Meals. He graduated from Wall Lake High School with the class of 1955. He attended Dubuque University and then transferred to Buena Vista College, graduating with a B.A. in Education. He completed his graduate education at Drake University with an M.A. in Education. Ron was united in marriage to Louise Anna Rickers on December 18, 1955 and to this union five children were born. Ron was a lifelong educator, beginning as an elementary school teacher and quickly becoming a school principal, serving in Storm Lake, Eagle Grove, Carroll, and Ames. Upon retirement from the Ames school system and relocating to Nevada, he became a student teacher supervisor for Iowa State University, retiring from this at age 75. Throughout his life he and his wife were avid camping enthusiasts, especially traveling to spend time exploring new places and visiting family at every opportunity. Ron was a faithful Christian throughout his entire life and an example to his large family.

Ron is survived by his wife, Louise of Nevada; his children, Randall (Linda) of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Rebecca (Jack) Carl, of Towanda, Kansas; Steven, of Sarasota, Florida; Timothy (Latifah), of Ames; and Brian, of Des Moines: his grandchildren, Lori, Thomas, Stephanie, Matthew, David, Christina, Anna, Jacob, Brianna, and Azaria; his great-granddaughter, Kennedy; his sister Kathryn “Peggy” of Clinton, Missouri, and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Jayson.

Memorial contributions may be made in memory of Ron, to the Alzheimer’s Association-Greater Iowa Chapter or the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics-Stroke Clinic.
