PIONEER ROLAND WOMAN IS DEAD

MRS. CHARLES CHRISTIAN HAD LIVED THERE OVER 77 YEARS

Roland, Dec. 29--The death of Mrs. Ellen Christian, 79, one of the pioneer women of Howard township and Roland, occurred Saturday at the home of her daughter Mrs. Peter Tolbertson at Spicer, Minn.

The body will be brought back to Roland and the funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon. There will be short services held at 1:30 at the home of the elder son J. A. Christian, three miles east of Roland, after which the funeral be held at 1:30 at Salem church with Rev. Holen in charge, with interment in the Roland cemetery by the side of the husband Charles Christian who died about 17 years ago.

Mrs. Christian, born Ellen Erickson, was a daughter of one of the real pioneer families of the "North Settlement", was born at Lisbon, Ill., an was but a year and a half of age, when her people came out to Story county and located in Howard township, where her home had been continuously with the exception of the past year and a half when she had spent part of the time with her children in Minnesota.

Mrs. Christian leaves three sons and three daughters. The sons are J. A. Christian of Roland and Lewis and Clarence Christian of Butterfield, Minn. The daughters are Mrs. Peter Tolbertson of Spicer, Minn., Mrs. Henry Christian of Kenyon, Minn., and Mrs. Charles Hummell of Waterloo.

Mrs. Christian was a woman of fine character and was dearly beloved not only by the members of her family but by a wide circle of neighbors and friends.
