Esther Lorena (Benson) Kuhn, 89, formerly of Ames, passed away June 26, 2018, at Hillcrest Country Estates in Papillion, Nebraska. A celebration of her life will be held at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames at 11:00 AM on Wednesday July 11, 2018. Burial will be at Fridhem Lutheran Church cemetery in Hordville, Nebraska later in the week.
Esther was born August 19, 1928, to Birger and Ethel (Timmons) Benson in Hordville, Nebraska. She grew up and graduated from Hordville High School in 1945. Esther taught in several rural schools in Nebraska: Hampton, Marquette, Sargent, St. Paul, Bennett, and Elmwood. Esther and Roy Kuhn were married July 16, 1949. In 1954, they moved to Sheldon, Iowa where she taught during the school year and each summer took graduate courses and graduated with a degree in Elementary Education at Westmar College in Le Mars. In 1959, the couple moved to Rock Rapids where Esther taught third grade until the birth of their daughters.
In 1964, Roy and Esther moved to Ames where she kept busy as a Welcome Wagon representative, hostess at the Cardinal Room in the Iowa State Memorial Union, and served lunches at Northwood Elementary School. She was a volunteer leader of the Ames Jolly Clovers 4-H Club and was a poll worker on Election Days. Esther was active in Bethesda Lutheran Church where she taught Bethel Bible classes. Throughout her life she enjoyed playing piano, visiting with friends and family, mall walking, and volunteering her time.
Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Tami Kuhn of Nevada, Iowa and Kristi Kuhn of Papillion, Nebraska; her brother, Floyd (Joan) Benson of Waukee; her sister, Agnes (Bernie) Andreasen of Grand Island, Nebraska; and sister-in-law, Ann (Eddie) Benson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roy; one sister, Audrey (Benson) Nygren, and seven brothers: Carl, Albin, Verner, Clarence Harold, Eddie, and Elmer.
Memorial contributions may be given to Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames or Hillcrest Hospice (not tax deductible) in Bellevue, Nebraska.
