Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Matthew Harker, 42, of Ames, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, June 16, 2018 at home in Ames. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 11, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames. Memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 12, 2018, also at Adams Funeral Home.

Matt was born April 28, 1976, the son of John W. Harker Jr. and Nanci (Hill) McCune in Creston, Iowa. In 1985, the family moved to Ames where Matt graduated from Ames High School. He enjoyed being with family and friends, and visiting the family farm and the Netterfield Timber.

Matt had a few close friends, but he was really a friend to all. When someone needed a place to stay short term, he would invite them into his home. Since he was listed as an organ donor, Matt may live on helping someone else with a better quality of life.

Matt enjoyed a number of hobbies that included video gaming with friends near and far, collecting HO Scale Santa Fe and Bicentennial trains, Ertl farm tractors and equipment, Legos, and Transformers. He also liked to collect and watch action adventure, sci-fi, and war movies.

Matt’s love of pets and most animals extended throughout his life. When he was younger, he liked to go to the family farm to be around animals. There were always a few dogs and cats in his life.

Matt is survived by his father, John W. (Becky) Harker Jr. of Ames; his mother, Nanci (Jerry Musselman) McCune of Tucson, Ariz.; his sisters, Brooke Harker and Katherine Harker, of Sherman Oaks, Cali; grandmother Betty Jo Harker, of Ames; aunt Vicki Harker, of Ames.

He is preceded in death by his grandparents, John W. Harker Sr. of Ames and Norris and Katherine Hill of Nebraska City, NE.

Matt, a kind, gentle soul, will be greatly missed. The family requests no flowers, memorials in Matt's honor can be sent to the Story County Animal Shelter, 975 W Lincoln Way, Nevada, IA. 50201. Checks should be made out to "Friends of the Animals."
