George Frederick Moon II, age 70, of Ames passed away May 10, 2018 from esophageal cancer at Israel Family Hospice House. A gathering of friends and family will be from 5-7 on Monday, May 14th at Bethesda Lutheran Church, 1517 Northwestern Ave., Ames, Iowa. A celebration of George's life will be held on Tuesday, May 15th at 1 pm at Bethesda Lutheran Church with visitation one hour prior to services.

George was born to Ellen and George Moon on December 7, 1947 in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He grew up in Newton and graduated in 1966. George attended Marshalltown Community College, Northwest Missouri State and Iowa State University. George enjoyed watching college basketball and attending grandchildrens' basketball, baseball and tennis activities. He also liked to entertain people with many stories.

George began working at Hy-Vee in Newton as soon as he was old enough. He later made a career with Hy-Vee starting at the Ames store in 1973. He considered Hy-Vee a second home, and many co-workers and customers his extended family. He was with the company over 50 years at the time of his retirement in February, 2017. Customers were willing to wait in line longer just to get a chance to catch up with George. He would proudly tell them about his family and catch up on the lives of his customers' families. He was the helpful smile in every aisle.

George is survived by his wife Faye and children Collin (Erin) of Polk City, Karen and Rachel of West Palm Beach; his grandchildren Evan, Ethan and Easton Moon and Kaelie Spallholtz; his parents Ellen and George Moon of Newton, and his sister Melody (Dave) Bonenberger of Bloomington, Minnesota. George was preceded in death by his grandparents.

George is also survived by his furry family Annie and Dr. Tom and extended furry family, Lily, Teddy, Rocky and Spike. He was preceded in death by his beloved cat Cleo who lived with him longer than his own children, and Mr. Furley.
