Edward “Coach” Schwieger, 73, of Ames passed away with family by his side at Accura Healthcare on Monday, April 23, 2018.

Edward was born Tuesday, July 18, 1944 in Fort Dodge, Iowa, to the Late Robert and Lavonne (Cannon) Schwieger, he was a graduate of Fort Dodge High School. On February 7, 1965, he married Patricia A. Stilwell in Wichita, Kansas.

He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1962, taking basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas. He was assigned duty at Kunsan Air Force Base in Kunsan, Korea, for 13 months as an Air Policeman. On completion of this tour of duty, he was assigned duty at McConnell Air Force Base in Wichita, Kansas. He was honorably discharged in 1966.

Following time served in the Air Force, he was employed as a wholesale route salesman for Colonial Bread and Hiland potato chips for 15 years. He was later employed as a field manager for U-Haul for 10 years. He was a graduate from AIB with a degree in Accounting, then worked for Vitals Trucking until becoming disabled due to several strokes and seizures.

Not yet ready to retire, he was asked and urged by Dale Tramp and Jim Duea to become a volunteer football coach for their sophomore football team at Ames High, which he did for 25+ years. He also volunteered as a coach for the AHS Boys’ track team.

Over the years, Ed made many new friends at the local Hy-Vee, where you could find him most weekday mornings, drinking coffee and talking sports.

Coach is survived by his wife Patricia of Ames, his beloved children Joe (Lisa) Schwieger of North liberty, and Tammy (Rob) Twiselton of Story City. He has four granddaughters, Brittany, Kristen, Vanessa, and Abigail, and one great grandson Zachariah. He also leaves behind one Brother Richard (Marty) Schwieger of Alexandria, Aunt Dorothy (94) of Gowrie, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Family and friends may join us in celebrating Coach’s life on Sunday, April 29 from 1-4 pm at North Grand Christian Church, 919 30th Street, Ames, Iowa.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be given to the family.

The family of Edward Lee Schwieger expresses its appreciation to all who have been so thoughtful during this time.
