Jim was born on March 3, 1957 in Carthage, Missouri to Bill and Billie Chittenden. His formative years were spent on Main Street where he spent many hours playing army and baseball with the "Main Street Gang" and attending Mark Twain School. He attended Carthage Senior High where he played football, baseball and ran track. He met his bride, Debbie Shanks, while in high school and they married in 1976. They were happily married for 42 years. Jim attended Missouri Southern College where he ran track. He graduated in 1979 with a B.S degree in Biology. He worked 40 years in the food and milk industry as a food safety expert; most recently as Quality Manager for Burke Corp. in Nevada, Iowa. Jim spent his life growing his relationship with the Lord, including sharing His word with anyone who would listen and truly walking the walk. He was a life-long member of the Church of Christ where he was baptized on May 24, 1970. He was also a proud member of The Cherokee Nation.

Jim had many hobbies. He was an amazing vocalist and a gifted artist but hunting was his true passion. He felt there was nothing better than sitting in a tree stand at the break of day and giving thanks to God for the glory of his creation.
