Obituary from Bethesda Lutheran Church, Ames, Story County, Iowa:

Charles E. Coney, 81, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

Charles E. “Chuck” Coney was born February 15, 1936 on the family farm near Pilger, NE to Edward and Tillie (Carlson) Coney, the fourth of eight children. He graduated from Pilger High School in 1954, where he was a standout basketball and baseball player. He attended Wayne State College, and served 2 years in the U.S. Army, he played basketball for both. On October 23, 1961 Chuck married Hannah Gronwold.

Chuck worked in the construction field for 35 years, working in North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Kansas, Illinois and Iowa. Chuck loved the family farm and took his family there whenever possible. He continued to help his parents farm the land, fix machinery and do chores until his parents moved to town. Chuck was an outdoors man through and through. He loved to fish, and hunt deer and all kinds of birds, which he taught his children. He took great pride in hearing what their hunts produced. He always had a loyal hunting dog at his side. Chuck and Hannah have been enjoying their time in Akaska, South Dakota every spring and fall for 14 years. They enjoy spending time with the locals, but Chuck loved fishing on Lake Oahe on the Missouri River, and was on the river whenever the weather allowed.

Chuck loved spending time with his grandchildren. He never missed a baptism, first communion, confirmation, graduation or wedding. Chuck and Hannah tried to make it to as many of their grandchildren’s events as possible. He especially loved when they came to fish with him in South Dakota.

Chuck is survived by his wife, Hannah; their children Susan Trocke of St. Cloud, MN, Lorie Thomes of Arlington, MN, Philip (Nicole) Coney of Des Moines, IA, and Eddie Coney of Ames, IA; grandchildren John Sobiech, Jessica Thomes (Scott) Pepin, Jason Thomes, Michelle Thomes (Derick Ruff), Lindsay Thomes (Jacob Sjostrom), Nathan Thomes, Traci (Travis) Sayre, and Joshua Coney; 5 great-grandchildren Nolan and Anna Pepin, Chase and Gabby Thomes, and Mia Ruff; sisters Marilyn Ahrens and Donna Firkins; brother Larry Coney; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Stanley Coney and Roland Coney; sisters Nancy Funk and Carol James.
