John “J.L.” Chitty, 76 of Nevada, passed away Saturday, February 3, 2018, at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

John was born June 22, 1941, in Stuart, Iowa the son of James and Louisa (Rae) Chitty. He attended Colo High School and was united in marriage to Sharon Ann Thompson on October 6, 1961, at the Colo United Methodist Church. John was a member of the Maxwell Lions Club, the Nevada Whirlers Square Dancing Club and had served on the Maxwell Fire Department. He started Chitty Garbage in 1973 and enjoyed running the company with Sharon until retiring in 2009 when his sons Michael and Patrick took over the family business. John spent many winters in Mississippi and liked to fish.

John is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sharon of Nevada; his children: Julie (Pat) Happe of DeWitt, IA, Michael (Lynn) Chitty of Ames and Patrick (Karin) Chitty of Ames; six grandchildren: Trevin (Nikki) Happe, Devin Happe, Lauren (Dustin) Meier, Garrett, Sophie and Philip Chitty; two great-grandchildren: Bennett Meier and Blake Happe; and his siblings: Douglas (Karen) Chitty of Boone, Janice Kitchen of Nevada and Joseph “Joe” Chitty of Tucson, AZ. He was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Olivia Chitty; and three brothers: Paul (in infancy), Robert and James “Jim” Chitty.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, February 7 at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Memorial services will be 4 p.m. Thursday, February 8 also at the funeral home with Pastor David Burling officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Heartland Adult Day Center, Story County Senior Care or the Israel Family Hospice House.

Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada is handling arrangements.
