Marvin G. Julius
June 6, 1922 - January 22, 2018

Iowa State University Professor Emeritus, Marvin G. Julius, 95, of Ames, died Monday, January 22, 2018 in Ames, Iowa.

Marvin Julius was born near Palmer, Iowa to Alfred and Anna Julius. He was a 1940 graduate of Manson High School and a 1968 graduate of Iowa State University with a Ph.D. degree in Economics. He began his ISU career as extension director in Humboldt County, Iowa in 1955 and joined the campus-based Extension Service in 1963, first as civil defense coordinator and subsequently as extension economist for community development. He produced economic base studies for Iowa areas as an aid to diversification of the state's economy. At various times he was a consultant to state government for tax studies and agricultural valuations.

He served 3 1/2 years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II as a First Lieutenant and was recalled for 18 months during the Korean Conflict. He held many volunteer roles in the community including the Board of Education in Humboldt, Iowa, President of the Iowa Association for Retarded Citizens, as chairman of the initial advisory committee for the allocation of human services funds in Story County, and guardian or advocate for several persons with handicaps.

He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, American Agricultural Economics Association, Kiwanis, National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees, The Arc of Story County, Story County Human Services Advisory Council, and a number of other health related service committees.

On June 22, 1947, he married Maxine Meeske of Pocahontas, Iowa. Survivors include his wife, Maxine of Ames; a daughter, DeAnne Julius (Ian Harvey) of London, England; and three sons, Kent (Erja) of Reunion, Fla., and Mark and Lane of Ames. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Megan (Luke) Johnson of Boston, Mass., Ross (Rebecca) Harvey of Copenhagen, Denmark, Emma Julius of Sarasota, Fla. and Niklaus Julius of Ames; four great-grandchildren, Zachary and Jake Johnson of Boston, and Theodore and Linnea Harvey of Copenhagen; his sister, Maxine (Paul Barrett) of Pocahontas; and a brother, Eldon (Dorothy) Julius of Albuquerque, N.M.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 31, with a visitation one hour prior, at Northcrest Retirement Community in Ames, with Pastor Bryan Simmons officiating. Burial will be in Ames Municipal Cemetery.
