From Nevada Representative May 2, 1900

John Rich was born near Harveysburg, Ohio, June 29, 1832, and died at Ames, Iowa, April 29, 1900, after a short illness of stomach and heart trouble. He spent the first fourteen years of his life near Harveysburg, and then moved with his parents to Grant county, Indiana, where on Feburary 10, 1853, he was married to Miss Susannah Hix. In March 1858 they started overland in a wagon for Iowa, arriving May 30, 1858, in Story county where he afterwards brought a farm in Milford township and lived upon it until the spring of 1891. He then moved to Ames, where he resided until his death. Mr. Rich, it will be noted, was one of the pioneers of Story county and through all of his many years of residence here he was one of its representative citizens. He was a man of character, the father of a worthy family and a neighbor who was esteemed by those about him. His death will cause sincere regret through a wide circle of acquaintance and will occasion especial sorrow among those of the elder generation who were his coworkers in the upbuilding of the county.
