From Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home & Crematory obituary, Nevada and Maxwell, Story County, Iowa:

Michael James Birchmier, 53 of Maxwell, IA passed away Sunday, December 17, 2017, at Story County Medical Center in Nevada, IA.

Michael was born August 5, 1964, in Des Moines, the son of James Louis and Mary Ida (Martin) Birchmier. He graduated from Maxwell High School in 1983 and was united in marriage to Rhonda Posegate and her 3 children on November 23, 1996, at Memorial Lutheran Church in Nevada, IA. Michael was a farmer first and also worked for Story Construction. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Colo. He loved spending time with his grandchildren especially taking them for a pontoon boat ride and working with them to turn their 4-H calves into pets. The solitude and power of operating a V-ripper was heaven on earth to him. He took pride in restoring his dad’s first new tractor, a 1950 Ferguson and the 806 Rhonda gave him for their 10th anniversary. That big black diesel pickup truck with a “few” chrome accessories everyone knew was Michael’s.

Michael was always ready to help a friend in need and his friends were like family. He will be remembered as a loyal and loving husband, father, son, Papa, and friend.

Michael is survived by his wife, Rhonda of Maxwell; his parents, Jim “JB” and Mary Birchmier of Collins; his children: Brooke (Chad) Knop and their children: Cade, Jax, Bianca and Dekker of Nevada, IA; Blair (Tara) Posegate and their daughter, Rory of Stacy, MN; and Ross (Kate) Posegate and their daughter Torin of Blaine, MN; his brother, Mark (Marti) Birchmier of Maxwell; his sisters: Julie (Daren) Laffey of Runnells and Jean Birchmier of Maxwell; his in-laws: Beth (David) McDonald, Peggy Kurth, Winston Moffatt, Amy Moffatt and Wesley Moffatt; and his faithful German Shepherd, Ida. He was preceded in death by his brother-in-law, Russell Kurth.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, December 21, at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada with a Rosary service at 4 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 22 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Nevada with Father Rick Dagit officiating. Burial will follow at St. James Catholic Cemetery in Colo.

Memorial contributions may be made to Story County 4-H in memory of Michael.
