Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
Hannah Ramsay Miller was born September 3, 1940, on a farm near Mt. Olive, Mississippi, the daughter of Charles and Mary Hubbard Ramsay. She was actively involved in community activities and attended Mt. Olive Schools where she graduated valedictorian of her class in 1958. Hannah enrolled at Mississippi State College for Women (now MUW in Columbus) and graduated with a degree in Chemistry in 1962. Hannah’s first job after college was in the Biochemistry Department at Southern Research Institute in Birmingham, Alabama, where she met her husband, David Miller. Hannah and David were married May 1964 at Hopewell Presbyterian Church in the Jaynesville, Mississippi Community where her family had worshipped for many generations. After their marriage, Hannah and David moved to Colorado where David was employed by the Center for Disease Control.
Hannah worked as an analytical chemist for the Food and Drug Administration and later as a research technician at Colorado State University where she co-authored more than a dozen publications on the effects of radiation on chromosome damage. When her husband accepted an administrative and faculty position with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston in 1988, Hannah began working there as well in the Department of Molecular Virology where she continued until she retired.
Hannah and David lived in several locations during their marriage, but spent the last 30 years in Texas. Due to the decline in Hannah’s health, the couple recently moved to Ames, Iowa, to be near their son, Clay and his wife Amy.
Hannah was preceded in death by a son Zane Tyler Miller, her parents, Charles and Mary Ramsay, her brother Charles Ramsay Jr. and his wife Betty, and recently a very close cousin, Hugh Hubbard. Hannah is survived by her husband, David, her son Clay (Amy) of Nevada, Iowa, her daughter-in-law, Polly Miller of Lewisville, Texas, four grandchildren, Elise Miller of Stanford, California, and Ashton, Brody and Claire Miller of Lewisville, Texas.
Hannah succumbed on November 5, 2017 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa, after a long battle with breast cancer. Funeral services will be held at Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Mt. Olive, Mississippi, on November 11, 2017 with the Rev. David Wakeland from Houston, Texas, officiating. Interment will follow at the Hopewell Cemetery.
In lieu of floral arrangements, the family asks that memorial gifts be sent to: the Hannah Miller Memorial Fund, c/o Christ Church San Antonio, 9330 Corporate Drive, Suite 411, Selma, TX 78154; the Israel Family Hospice House, 400 S.
