Obituary for Helen Marie Johnson

Helen M (Heisman) Johnson of Ames, formerly of Callender, IA. passed away surrounded by family October 6, 2017.

A visitation will be held Monday October 9, 2017 at First United Methodist Church in Ames, from 12:00 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Funeral service will follow the visitation at 1:30 p.m. Burial will be in Callender Cemetery at 4:30 p.m.

Helen M Heisman was born July 2, 1926 on a farm north of Harcourt, IA. She was the daughter of Otto and Corrine (Todd) Heisman. The following year the family moved to Callender. Helen was baptized and confirmed in the United Methodist Church in Callender. Graduating from Callender High in 1944. She was then employed in Des Moines as a secretary and volunteer Red Cross nurse aide. She later worked at Somers Savings Bank in Callender.

Helen and Willis (Bill) Johnson were married on July 18, 1948.They farmed together, east of Callender until 1990 when they retired. Two children blessed their home. Helen was a long-time member of the Callender Methodist Church until it closed. Then Trinity United Methodist in Fort Dodge, and now First United Methodist in Ames. She enjoyed her time as a Sunday School Teacher. 4-H leader, a member of the Webster County Women’s chorus, and an officer of the Fort Dodge District United Methodist Women.

Helen is survived by her daughter Jan (Stephen) Martin of Ames, IA; son Doyle (Leigh) of Boulder, CO; grandchildren, Cecily (Ryan) Johnston of Rhodes, IA; Gavin Martin of Denver, CO; great grandchildren, Cash Johnston, Shelby Johnston, Kinley Johnston, and Paisley Johnston; and nephew Brad (Mary) Parks of Monroe, VA.

She was preceded in death by, her parents, her loving husband of 63 years Willis (Bill) Johnson in 2012, sisters Jane Nelson, and Margaret Parks.
