Kathryn Bender
November 21, 1940 - September 11, 2017

Kathryn Christine Bender, 76, of Rolling Green Village in Nevada, IA died Mon, Sept. 11, 2017, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames after a very long and arduous battle with cancer. A gathering of friends and family will be from 9-11 a.m., Sat, Sept. 16, 2017 at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way Ames, Iowa with a service immediately following at 11:30 a.m. at the Ames Municipal Cemetery.

Kathy is survived by her sister, Virginia Gilmore, of Mineral Ridge, OH; and two brothers, Russell H. Bender (Marianne), of Wenatchee, WA; and Richard E. Bender (Sharon), of Ankeny, IA; five nieces, 2 nephews, eight great nephews, five great nieces; 1 great great nephew and her very supportive friend for over 44 years, Dennis Paxson. Kathy was born in Ames, IA, on Nov. 21, 1940, the daughter of Russell O. and E. Marie Bender. In 1959 she graduated from Ames High School and then attended Luther College in Decorah, IA. She was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem and attended Bethesda Lutheran Church. During her working career she was a very dedicated office worker for Fisher Governor Company in Marshalltown, IA for 32 years.

Her family has fond memories of her affection for her dogs, and her family and friends. She thoroughly enjoyed the Iowa State Fair, was an avid Iowa State Cyclone fan and delighted in bingo, going to the Meskwaki casino, and traveling with family to Colorado, especially Estes Park. Religion played a very important role in Kathy's life and for many years she was an ardent fan of televangelist, Robert Schuller.

Kathy will long be remembered by her family, her caregivers, and her friends as a strong willed person with staunch opinions but also a very loyal friend with a kind heart.

Kathy was preceded in death by her parents and her nephew, Douglas Warrick.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Israel Family Hospice House or the Mary Greeley Medical Center Oncology department.
