He was married in 1846 to Catherine Logan to which union three children were born viz W. H. Golly, Lilias Golly and Elizabeth Golly. In 1850 he with his family moved to Batavia, Ill. where he lived bu a few months, but in that short space of time death took from him his wife and the two little girls after which he returned to his native town in New York. January 22nd, 1854 he was married to Eliza J. Mitchell, one son was born to this union., John M. Golly who was born February 22, 1855 and died in Zearing, Iowa December 8th 1903. He moved to Illinois a second time in 1855 and lived there until December 1864 when he and family moved to Iowa and he has lived in this vicinity since that time except three or four years that he lived in Clay county, Iowa.

He was one of the pioneers of this part of Story county and when he located on the --- of section 15 of what is now Lincoln Township there were but six families living in it. He lived to see this part of Story county change from an almost unbroken expanse of prairie to well improved farms, and the value of the land to change from about $3.00 per acre to $150 or more per acre. His many friends nearly all called him "Uncle John" and he was well respected by all who knew him. He left his wife Eliza J. Golly, the son W. H. Golly, several grandchildren and many other more distant relatives and friends to mourn his departure from this life. He died in the fullness of years and his end was as peaceful as though he had been going to sleep. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. James Teeters in the Christian Church in Zearing at 2 p. m. Friday October 3, 1913 after which he was laid to rest in the Zearing cemetery. "A good man has gone to his rest."
