Obituary from Lewis Homes For Funeral & Cremation Services, Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, Iowa.

Cathy A. Arola, 69, of Ames, formerly of Columbus Junction, passed away on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at Bethany Life Facility in Story City, Iowa. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. Inurnment will be in Indian Creek Cemetery. Following the inurnment, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7, 2017 at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Memorials have been established for the volunteer program at Mary Greely Hospital and the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. Cathy Anne Powers was born on October 20, 1947 in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter of Dale and Charlotte (Poindexter) Powers. On June 14, 1975, Cathy was united in marriage to David Arola in Columbus Junction. Cathy graduated from Columbus Community Schools in 1965 and received her master’s degree from Northwest Missouri State University. She was a teacher for Columbus Community Schools and Chilliocthe Schools in Missouri before becoming a guidance counselor in the Ames Community School District. Cathy was a member of Olli Reading group where she shared her passion for reading. She enjoyed traveling and especially the trips she took to England and Ireland. During her retirement years, Cathy volunteered for Mary Greely Hospital in the surgical department and driving elderly patients to their appointments.

Cathy will be deeply missed by her son; Eric (Shannon Nehrkorn) of Ames, Iowa; her father and step-mother, Dale and Anna Powers of Iowa City; brothers, Steven (Tonya) Powers of Illinois City and Lonnie (Jackie) Powers of Iowa City and several nieces, nephews and great- nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother; husband, David in 1999; grandmother, Ruth Powers and her father and mother-in-law, Kay and Arvo Arola.
