James “Jim” Edward Toney, 78 of Collins, passed away Friday, July 7, 2017, at his home in Collins.

Jim was born October 6, 1938, in Clarke County, Iowa, to John and Iona (Heston) Toney. He attended country school and Leon High School before he enlisted in the Navy in 1956 until his honorable discharge in 1959. On June 11, 1961, Jim was united in marriage to Esther Mae Samson in Indianola. Jim worked highway construction and then worked at two Massey Ferguson dealerships in Granger and Nevada. In 1980, Jim started Jim Toney Repair working on farm equipment with a shop first in Colo and then relocating to Collins. Jim operated the business until his retirement in 2006.

Jim and Esther enjoyed traveling together. Visiting all but three states and many countries in Europe. He lived a good Christian life and was a dedicated family man. Jim loved the time he spent with family. There was a very special place in his heart for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren that he made many memories with.

Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Esther of Collins; his children: William (Kari) Toney of Las Vegas, NV, David (Molly) Toney of Collins, Dennis (Chelly) Toney of Colo, Patricia (Eric) Bruxvoort of Bondurant and Robert (Megan) Toney of Collins; his siblings: Shirley Folland of Davenport, IA, Fran Ellis of Weldon, IA, Richard (Barb) Toney of Leon, IA and Kathy Showers of Humeston, IA; 16 grandchildren: Brittany (Nick) Meltzer, Druid (Kelsie) Toney, Kathryn (Matt) Deugan, Devan Toney, Kristine Bruxvoort, Dominic Toney, Zachary Toney, Jonathan Toney, Kimberly (Gary) Darr, Bryan Toney, Missy Toney, Kayla Toney, Kevin Bruxvoort, Autmn Toney, Dylan Toney and Ellie Toney; and six great-grandchildren: Kairi Toney, Owen Toney, Gavin Darr, Violet Meltzer, Aiden Darr and Fawkes Toney. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John Rolland Toney; his sister, Barbara Jean Toney; his in-laws, Paul and Vera Samson; and his brothers-in-law: Dwayne Folland, Jerry Ellis, Lonnie Showers and Robert Shepherd.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 12 at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, July 13 also at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be at the Collins Evergreen Cemetery in Collins.
