Richard Dean Mohler was born January 20, 1933, in Traer, Iowa and died June 24, 2017, in Ames, Iowa at age 84. His parents Harold and Jean Stoakes Mohler, brother Harold West Mohler, and sister Roberta Jean Mohler Viers preceded him in heath.
He graduated from Maxwell Community High School, attended Colorado State University and received his B.A. degree from Drake University.
He was married July 20, 1953, and is survived by his wife Joan Ruemelin Mohler, who resides at Bethany Manor in Story City. They were married nearly 64 years. He is survived by his children Jeanne Mohler (Fred Jenness) of Golden Valley, MN and Martin Mohler (Ann Skrycki) of Milford, MI, as well as two grandsons, Jonathan (Shanna) and Christopher. He is also survived by brother-in-law Paul Viers, three nephews, and two nieces.
He farmed in Maxwell for many years, bringing some of the first Charolais cattle to Story County. He worked for the John Deere Company in Ankeny, Iowa. He retired after 30 years of service and then traded with the Chicago Board of Trade.
He loved music, and although he played by ear, he taught himself to read music after retirement. He was in many instrumental and vocal groups playing for the Heartland Band, the Dixie Slicks, and Flyboys and Girl. "Flamin' Mamie" was his favorite.
He will be remembered for his strong opinions, conservative fiscal nature, sense of humor, and charitable donations, many of which were anonymous. His grandsons will remember a more mellow version of the original.
