Paul Wendell Stone
November 29, 1924 - June 22, 2017

Paul Stone, 92 of Nevada, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2017, at Story County Senior Care in Nevada.

Paul was born November 29, 1924, at Nevada, IA to Jim and Leona Stone. He graduated from Nevada High School in May of 1943. He was a member of the 1942 boys’ basketball team that placed third in the state tournament. Three weeks after graduation, he enlisted in the Navy. Paul went to boot camp at Farragut, ID and from there he went to gunnery school at Treasure Island in San Francisco. He served on two ships in the South Pacific for 20 months, the S.S. Edward A. MacDowell and the U.S.A. Sea Cat. Paul was a 20mm gunner on both ships. On December 10, 1945, he was discharged at Shoemaker, CA.

On August 8, 1945, Paul was united in marriage to Midge Hansen at the First United Methodist Church in Nevada. They were married for 48 ½ years when Midge passed away on February 2, 1994.

Paul started working at Donnelley Marketing in Nevada in May of 1947 and was an account coordinator until his retirement in December of 1983. He was a member of Central Presbyterian Church in Nevada and the VFW and American Legion. In 1996, Paul was inducted into the Nevada High School Hall of Fame. The 1942 basketball team was honored on the 70th anniversary in 2012. Paul loved to fish and enjoyed his daily walks around town.

Paul is survived by four daughters: Diana (Galen) Lough of Nevada, Jodie (Sterling) Hunt of Nevada, Nancy (Bernie) Klug of Perrysburg, OH and Julie Stone of Marion, IA; one son, Kevin (Sue) Stone of Big Lake, MN; one brother, Bill Stone of Cedar Falls, IA; seven grandsons; one great-grandson; one great-granddaughter; and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Midge; and two brothers: Robert and Jimmie.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 26 at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 27 also at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will follow at the Nevada Municipal Cemetery in Nevada.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Nevada Patriotic Council.
