Born Shirly Ann Smuck on August 21, 1939 in Story City to the parents of Murl and Alice (Tesdall) Smuck. Shirly attended the Story City School System in her youth. On July 26, 1965, in Hudson, Iowa she was united in marriage to Dale Miller Sr. They made their home in Marshalltown until 1969 when the two moved to Albion. Shirly had a love for helping children whether it was volunteering as a teacher or volunteering her time to help run the little league concession stands for the Albion Little League. Her love of sports carried over into her free time always cheering for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Cubs, and loved playing softball and volleyball with her family. She once tried her hand at a powder puff stock car race, when she had finished she proclaimed that “once is just enough”. Shirly was also a very talented poet, she would write poems of individuals for any occasion but more frequently for funerals summarizing someone’s life in a beautiful way. She was a people person who never met a stranger, with a fantastic sense of humor. She loved to play cards, bingo, crossword puzzles, and crafts. Shirly loved many things but family gatherings, and traveling with her family was by far what she loved the most in this world. She loved babysitting her grand-daughter, and going to her dance recitals. After Dale passed away Shirly lived on her own in Marshalltown until she moved in to Grandview Nursing and Rehab Center. Shirly and her family would like to express great gratitude in care and tenderness given to Shirly during the time she had spent with them.

Left to treasure her memory are her children: Kitty Jo (Bruce) Benda of Marshalltown, Clara Lynn (Dick Sr.) Metteer of Council Bluffs, Dale E. Miller, Jr (Dave) of Des Moines; four grandchildren: Rhiannon Benda engaged to (C.J.), Teri Koester, Dick Metteer, Nick Metteer; two great-grandchildren, Peyton and Karlee Koester; brother, Mike (Elaine) Smuck; sister, Sharon (Larry) Stowe; and several nieces and nephews.

In death she rejoined her first husband, Joseph Ferkin (1965); her daughter, Peggy Sue (1965); her second husband of 43 years, Dale; her sisters, Loretta and Diane; and her parents, Murl and Alice.
