Chas. H. Morris, the Enterprise mine-owner, died Saturday from the effects of the wound he received at the hands of the bootlegger Cain. It had been supposed that he would recover; but he had a turn for the worse on Friday, and from that time he continued to fail. Mr. Morris was a man of exceedingly high business and personal standing, and his death under any circumstances would have occasioned very great regret. As the victim, however, of a boot legger's resentment against the enforcement of the liquor laws of the state, he is regarded as a martyr to a righteous cause, and his death on this account will occasion especial indignation. As for the murderer Cain, he seems to have been the victim after the shooting of misplaced confidence in the surgeons and newspapers. He hid himself safely and easily from the Polk county officials, and after lying around home for a day or two he surrendered himself upon the theory that his victims were going to get well. The other of them, Johnson, doubtless will do so; but as to Morris there was a mistake that will almost certainly be had for Cain.
