Doris Emelene Guy
December 8, 1932 - May 2, 2017Doris E. Guy, 84 of Ames, Iowa was surrounded by family when she died on May 2, 2017 from cardiac arrest. Daughter of Everett and Alma (Schultz) Steward, Doris was born on December 8, 1932 in Freeborn County, Minnesota. After graduating from St. Ansgar High School, Doris attended the Allan School of Nursing in Waterloo, Iowa. She received her nurse cap in 1953 and went to work in Austin, Minnesota. There she met David Guy and they were married in 1958. In 1960, they moved to Ames where they continued to reside until their deaths.
Doris was called to be a nurse and received numerous recognitions for her service. Her work in Ames began at the Iowa State College Hospital and continued at Mary Greeley Memorial Hospital where she retired as House Supervisor. In retirement, she served as a volunteer for the American Red Cross and worked on over 24 national disasters including a supervisory role in the Care Center at the Pentagon disaster scene after September 11, 2001. She also shared her humanitarian spirit and organizational skills through volunteer work with the Association for Retarded Citizens, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and numerous church activities.
Her generous hospitality, love for food and mischievous smile will be missed by her survivors: daughters Barbara Guy (Mark Pierson), and Peggy Guy; grandchildren Shannon (Tony) Kooima, Jason (Courtney) Pierson, Mia (Luke) Osborne; great-grandson William Kooima; brothers Leroy (Marietta) Steward, Eugene (Hazel) Steward, and Merle (Pam) Steward; many nieces and nephews, and great-nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband David Guy, son John Guy, and sisters Marlene Duncomb and Betty Scranton.
Memorial contributions may be directed towards the family to be used at a later date as a donation to the Disaster Relief fund of the American Red Cross.
Visitation will be on Thursday, May 11th from 5:00-7:00 pm at Collegiate Presbyterian Church (CPC), 159 North Sheldon, Ames, Iowa. Memorial service will occur at 10:00 on Friday, May 12th at CPC.
