Mavis Hatteberg, age 100, passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2017 at Bethany Life Communities in Story City, IA.
Mavis Ruedella, the eldest daughter of Gerhard (GM) and Tobie (Prescott) Hatteberg was born southwest of Radcliffe on October 27, 1916. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, a rural church south of Radcliffe and confirmed at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Radcliffe.
Mavis received her education attending a rural school in Sherman Township and graduated from Radcliffe High School in 1933. While in high school she received Normal Training and taught country school three years.
In 1939, Mavis went to Chicago with friends. She got a job at M&M/Mars Candies Company and did office work there for 36 ˝ years. While in Chicago, Mavis was an active member at Hauge Lutheran Church teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, and supporting the Lutheran Church Women group. After moving to Ames, in 1977, she became a valuable member of the Hatteberg family "care team". She was an active member of Bethesda Lutheran Church and served in many areas of church life there.
In 2006, Mavis moved to Story City where she lived at Timberland Village until 2012 when she move to Bethany Life Communities where she lived until her passing on April 29, 2017. It was in October of 2016 that Mavis celebrated her 100th birthday with the help of nieces, nephews, grand and even some great-grand nieces and nephews.
Mavis always stayed in close contact with her family during those years in Chicago. She would make frequent train trips back to visit her family in Radcliffe and to attend special events like baptisms, confirmations, and graduations. She would ALWAYS remember the birthdays of her nieces and nephews with cards and coins taped inside. She would ALWAYS bring Mars candy bars and new samples of bars being made. She was ALWAYS generous to help out her family whenever and wherever there was a need. When her mother, Tobie, could no longer make the patch quilts, Mavis took over that activity and provided beautiful quilts to great and great-great nieces and nephews. She made for both family and friends so that her quilts are now throughout the US and even there are four in Norway. She made more than 300 quilts and they are treasured (and well used) blessings to all those who received them. Her recipes have been passed on to the next two generations but we still can't quite make them as good as Mavis did. She will ALWAYS be remembered for her love of God and her dedication to family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, grandparents, an infant brother Reuben Harald, three sisters, Ruth Johnson, Rhoda Golf and Hazel Pedersen and a brother Gerber Hatteberg, brothers–in–law Kenneth Pedersen and Philip Golf and sister-in-law, Pat Hatteberg.
She is survived by her brother-in-law Robert Johnson; five nieces Phyllis (Bruce) Coburn, Linda (Terry) Thompson, Kathy (Bruce) Friest, Pam (Dave) Ausenhus, Kristen (Ron) Happel; five nephews Gerald (Karen) Pedersen, Keith (Miriam) Pedersen, David (Janis) Pedersen, Gary (Marybeth) Hatteberg, Greg (Liz) Johnson; 24 great nieces and nephews and 34 great–great nieces and nephews.
