OBITUARY
DEATH OF S. S. FAWCETT
Sylvanus S. Fawcett father of the treasurer and deputy treasurer of Story county, died Sunday evening at his home in Pasadena, California, aged about seventy-five years. The death of Mr. Fawcett does not surprise any who were concerned in his condition, for his sons here had been warned a few days ago that his illness was critical, and Fred Fawcett left Friday morning for California. His attempt, however, to reach his fathers' side has not been wholly successful for his train is not due at Los Angeles until this evening.
Mr. Fawcett was a native of Ohio but was taken by his parents when a small child to Wisconsin, where he grew to his younger manhood. In 1852 he joined the throng of gold seeker who were migrating to California, and he remained in the Golden state for about eight years. He then returned to Wisconsin, where he remained until 1871. In that year he removed to Iowa and located upon a farm on the south line of New Albany township in Story county. He was married in the same year to Miss Hannah S. Gifford, and they continued to live on their homestead until 1867, when he removed to California, his second migration to that state being forty years after the first. His home there was for a time at Glendale; but for the past few years it has been at Pasadena. Mr. Fawcett is survived by his wife, his two sons Alfred J. and Edgar A. and daughter Jennie.
Mr. Fawcett was a man of ability and worth. He was circumscribed in his activities by deafness; but he was interested in the affairs of the world, and the people who knew him little or not at all but who have known his sons will estimate him most favorably and will extend to them sentiments of heartfelt sympathy.
