Death of Mrs. Eklund
Mrs. Sarah Eklund died on pneumonia, Tuesday, January 29, at the Eklund homestead south of Huxley, aged eighty four years. She had long been a sufferer from asthma, but her final illness covered only two weeks.
Mrs. Eklund was born at Vikedal, Norway, was married there to Osmund Skartvedt and with him came to America in 1854. When they arrived in Chicago cholera was raging in that city, many of the band of immigrants to which they were attached fell victims of the dread disease and Mr. Skartvedt was one of them. Bereft and in a strange land the vicissitudes of the widow were many. In 1858 she was married to Nels P. Eklund and in 1865 they came to Story county, and settled on a farm south of Huxley. In 1869 the deceased was widowed a second time. Of her three sons Alfred alone survives. Funeral services are held today, and interment is in the Palestine cemetery.
