Raymond H Petefish
December 10, 1926 - March 24, 2017Raymond Hildreth Petefish, 90, formerly of Ames, passed away Friday, March 24, 2017, in Sioux City. A celebration of his life will be held during a family gathering in May. A private family burial will take place in Story Memorial Gardens.
Raymond was born December 10, 1926 at home in rural Slater, Iowa, to Rollo (RE) and Merle (Hildreth) Petefish. He attended Bondurant High School and played on the 1943 undefeated high school football team. His family moved and Ray then attended East High School, Des Moines. He left high school during his senior year to join the United States Coast Guard near the close of WWII. Raymond was stationed at Alameda, CA and then Honolulu. Ray served on a total of 5 USCG Cutters: Moberly, Tiger, Basswood, Sedge, and Kukui.
Following military service, Ray married his high school sweetheart Geraldine E. Jordan on October 9, 1949. They moved to the family dairy farm near Colo, Iowa. Ray and Geri had four daughters: Sandy, Sally, Peggy, and Christine.
Ray and Geri eventually purchased the 240-acre dairy farm. Ray operated the dairy production while Geri ran a laying hen production with 1000 hens. After retiring, Ray owned a professional landscape business serving commercial properties in Boone and Ames.
Fishing was Ray's favorite pastime-preferring Canada's cold lakes. He had many a good fishing story. Ray enjoyed watching the Green Bay Packers, often citing the mantra, "the Pack is Back". He was known to sport a "cheese-head" during playoffs. And, he followed the ISU Cyclone ball teams, often streaming the games.
He is preceded in death by his wife; Geraldine (Jordan) Petefish, parents; Rollo and Merle, two brothers; John and Charles, one sister; Betty Petefish Bodensteiner, and one granddaughter; Hannah Fulton.
He is survived by his four daughters; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
