Celia Nessa, age 93 of Hubbard, IA, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at Hubbard Care Center.
Celia Ann (Mathiason) Nessa was born on August 9, 1923 on the family farm near Story City, Iowa. She was the youngest of three children born to Nels and Mabel (Thompson) Mathiason.
She received her education by attending country school and then attended high school in Story City and graduated with the Class of 1941.
Celia was married in 1942 to Lester Lunning. One daughter was born to this union. Lester was a casualty of WWII being killed December 2, 1944.
On October 12, 1946, Celia was united in marriage to Arlon Nessa at Grace Evangelical Church in Story City. They farmed east of Garden City, Iowa all of their lives and moved into Hubbard in 1977.
Celia was always willing to learn something new; she played the organ, piano, guitar and violin. She learned to do upholstery, stained glass, sewing, quilting and square dancing. She was an excellent cook and house keeper, and Arlon said that she could drive a tractor better than any man. They enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona for thirty-three years, but her ultimate joy was her grandchildren.She was a member of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church where she was active in the Mission Circle. She was also active in the Hubbard Care Center Auxiliary.
Those thankful for having shared her life include three daughters Sharon (Bill) Formanek of Des Moines, Iowa, Annie (Stan Willie) Nessa of Denver, Colorado, Kathie (Amos Cooper) Nessa of Des Moines, Iowa; one son Mike (Connie) Nessa of Hubbard, Iowa; six grandchildren Craig, Tony and Cory Quist, T. J. Harris, Travis Nessa and Shannon Skartvedt; eleven great-grandchildren; along with many other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Lester Lunning and Arlon Nessa, two siblings Mildred Thompson and Emery Mathiason.
