Death of Mrs. Tomlinson

Mrs. Ann R. Tomlinson died Saturday, January 23, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ross Backous, near Collins, aged seventy-eight years and four months. Mrs. Tomlinson, whose maiden name was Oxley, was a native of England and came to America with her husband, George Tomlinson, in 1853, and to Iowa 1869. Her husband returning from attending an agricultural meeting in Nevada was found dead in the sleigh at the bridge east of Maxwell on the bitter cold morning of January 11, 1887, and the cause of his death was never fully determined. She was the mother of eleven children, nine of whom survive her, as do also two brothers, Thomas and William Oxley of Maxwell and thirty-three grand-children and seventeen great-grand-children. It was the privilege of her sons to bear her remains at the funeral which was held at Peoria Monday. She was a woman of admirable qualities, and her memory will be tenderly cherished.
