CAPT. SMITH KILLED
Was Run Down by a Streetcar in Kansas City This Morning

A telegram shortly after noon today reported that Capt. I. L. Smith of Nevada had bee killed this morning by an electric car in Kansas City. The telegram was from his son John Henry by his partner, J. M. Bricker and similar advice, but without further particulars, was received by his eldest son, M. K. Smith at Ames. Capt. and Mrs. Smith had been spending a week in Kansas City with their son, Charles E. and John Henry, having gone down on Sunday of last week, and they were expected home in a day or so.

The above are the facts at hand. The news is a great shock to this community, and the mourning will be universal. Capt. Smith was about 74 years of age and was one of the best-known and best-beloved men in the county. He had lived in the county for about forty years and in Nevada for more than thirty years. He and Mrs. Smith celebrated their golden wedding a little more than two years ago, and their old age they have been spending very happily. In the present tragedy sympathy ill be instantly extended to Mrs. Smith; but being with two of her sons and her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Chas. E. Smith, it appears that the shock to her will be lightened all that is possible, and for so much her friends will be glad.

It will be assumed that the body of Capt. Smith will be brought back to Nevada for burial, and further announcement and proper obituary noatice will be made later.

Capt. Irenaus L. Smth born in Somerset county, Pennsylvania, about 74 years ago; was married there in 1856; entered the service of his country in 1861 as orderly Sergeant of Company C. 54th Pennsylvania and was mustered out with the rank of captain at the end of three years of service in 1864. He removed to McLean county, Illinois in 1865 and to Ames, Iowa in 1869. In 1875 he entered the office of Clerk of Court at Nevada as deputy and in 1876 was elected to that office and continued to occupy that office for five full terms.

LATEST--Capt. Smith's remains are expected here via the Short Line Tuesday morning.
