OBITUARY

Benjamin Breneman

Ames Intelligencer: Benjamin Breneman was born in Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, November 19, 1845. Died in Ames, Iowa, June 1, 1908. He came west in 1859 locating at Lisbon, Iowa, where he resided until he enlisted for the war, August 7, 1862. He became a member of Company F, Twenty-fourth regiment, Iowa Infantry volunteers, under Captain William C. Dummitt and Colonel E. C. Bryant. His regiment was assigned to the Thirteenth corps, army of Mississippi, and participated in the following battles: Port Gibson, Fourteen Mile House, Champion Hills and Siege of Vicksburg. In this siege he received, June 15, 1863, a gun shot wound in the thigh which kept him in the hospital for eleven months. Soon as able he rendered further service at intervals as driver of the ammunition wagon. His old wound kept troubling him and he was compelled to quit the service, being honorably discharged May 23, 1864. His record as a soldier was a very good one and for that we honor him. Since the war Ames has been his home. He leaves a son, a daughter, two brothers and one sister. The wife and mother passed away a year ago. The funeral was held at the Congregational church Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock, Rev. J. W. Steverson being in charge. Interment was made in the Ames cemetery.
