Char grew up in the Maplewood area of Minnesota and graduated from North St. Paul High School in 1949. On June 28, 1952, Char married Thomas Little. Their first two children were born in Minnesota and then moved to Ames in 1955 for Tom’s job and to raise their growing family. The other four children were born in Ames. Char was a homemaker and stay at home mom until the early 60s when she went to work at Iowa State University in the Chemistry department.
