Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.
David Alan Larson was born January 16, 1949 to Jens Willie and Vera Winifred May (Masters) Larson in Spencer, Iowa. David graduated from Ames High School in 1967 and served in the U.S. Army from 1968 to 1971, serving two tours in Vietnam. He received several awards, including the Bronze Star for his service. After his Honorable discharge, David graduated with a degree in Art and Design from Iowa State University in 1981.
David was a gifted artist and musician; he loved playing guitar throughout his life, and performed in the band "The Chessman" as a young man. He also enjoyed drawing, painting and photography. David was self-employed as a drywall carpenter but was a man of many talents and could fix or build just about anything. He enjoyed lively political debates with anyone who was up for the challenge. Dave was a kind, generous, gentle spirit who preferred to live a simple life.
David was awarded an Ames Citizen Hero Award for his exceptional action on September 11, 2004 when he entered a building fully involved in fire, with rapidly deteriorating conditions, to alert and assist the occupants in escaping harm.
David passed away peacefully with family by his side on February 15, 2017 at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown.
He is survived by his three children, Kara Larson of Clear Lake, Joseph (Christina) Larson of Clear Lake and Robert (Megan) of Ames; three grandchildren, Austin, Jenna and Tyler; two brothers, Paul (Linda) Larson of Ames and John (Julie) Larson of Ames; and his sister, Donna (Tom) Fuller of Rockford, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorials may be directed to his family and will be donated to the Iowa Veterans Home in his honor to be used for enrichment of the residents. The Larson family would like to dedicate a special thank you to the staff of the IVH, especially the Ulery South team, for the wonderfully compassionate and loving care they provided for David while he was with them.
