Hydrophobia Death at Boone

Little Victoria Swanson, the four-year-old child of Mr. and Mrs. L. A. Swanson of Boone died Wednesday morning of hydrophobia. Her convulsive suffering began Tuesday afternoon and were so terrible that witnesses were glad when the end came. The fatal bite was inflicted October 7, by the family dog when the child was playing in the door yard at home. The dog did not show symptoms of rabies at the time, but it was found dead two days later and its head was sent for examination to a expert at Iowa City who found no signs of the dog being rabid, and pronounced worry over the wound needless. The wound having been cauterized, it healed and the child seemed well till the dreadful malady developed ten weeks after the bite. It will be remembered that several other persons were bitten about the time this child was, a part of whom went to Iowa City for treatment, and that one or two animals have since died of hydrophobia, many dogs in the meantime have been killed. There is public demand now for quite general slaughter of dogs.
