TRAVELING MAN KILLED
Rear-End Collision Last night at Collins
In a collision resulting from an extra freight running into a regular way freight last evening at Collins Frank Bouton of Mason City, a traveling man in the candy line for Letts-Fletcher of Marshalltown, was instantly killed. Both trains were west-bound, the way freight standing at Collins and the extra hitting it at a speed of eight or ten miles an hour but hard enough to demolish the caboose of the way freight and two box cars ahead of the caboose. Bouton had just boarded the caboose at Collins to go to Maxwell, and he was the only person in the caboose at the time. Hence he was the only person killed or injured. No one was hurt on the extra, nor was any damage done to that train, save to smash the pilot of the engine. The accident occurred about 8:30 in the evening, and the story of the crew of the extra, which appears to be credited, is that their train had the block and that the way train had out no tail light. A gang of Dagoes got over to Collins from Maxwell about 9:30 and had the track cleared by 11:00.
Mr. Bouton was 34 years of age and widower, and he lived with his mother and little daughter at Mason City. His body was embalmed by R. E. Marsh, undertaker at Collins, and it was shipped this morning to Marshalltown from Colo, accompanied by G. W. Baldwin, the Collins merchant upon whom the unfortunate man had just been calling.
