J. F. Gillespie received word Saturday of the death of his brother-in-law, James L. Howard of Albany, Oregon. Mr. and Mrs. Howard, the latter Mr. Gillespie's sister, went to Oregon by the overland trail in 1863, being in a train large enough to insure safety from Indians, who were quite active just then, and they have had their home out there ever since. They have, however, been occasional visitors back in this country, and Mr. Howard will be favorably remembered by not a few old friends here and many more in Marshall county.
