ROLAND ROCKETS

But little can be added to the obituary notice of Jonas Duea given out in last week's Representative. Yet volumes could be written of his life and character that would be of untold benefit to the present generation. For over fifty years he was a citizen of this township, and acted an important part in making and shaping things locally. In all that pertained to making better and developing an improved condition of local affairs, Jonas Duea was a leader. As one of the very first pioneer settlers of this part of the county, he might be termed a maker and builder. He was a wise counselor, just in judgment, and generally correct in conclusion. We dare say that there is no one who can say that Jonas Duea ever did him wrong knowingly or wittingly. Possessed as he was with a rugged constitution he fought the battle of pioneer life valiantly and successfully. Always rejoicing, never sorrowing, onward through life he went. The harder the task, said one early settler today, the more cheerful Jonas Duea seemed, inspiring others that might be inclined to give up an fall by the wayside, to pull on. He responded promptly to the cry of distress taking this view of life that a part of citizenship was to aid and comfort others in sickness, sorrow and death. It was then given to him a long and useful life and as life's sun set he passed away without pain or suffering. He went to sleep, to sleep that sleep that knows no wakening. He had shaped and acted so well his part in life, that he had no fear of the beyond, but rather rejoiced that he was permitted to go and forever more be at peace with those who love and obey the Lord. His children that grew to man and womanhood are worthy of being called the sons and daughters of Jonas Duea, they being among our very best citizens. Mrs. C. Logan, the oldest lives northwest of Roland, Joseph and Rasmus north of Roland, Oscar at Terrill, Iowa and Eddie at Blue Earth, Minnesota. The daughter Jenie died a few years ago at her home near Council Bluffs, Myrah youngest lives at home with her step-mother.
