Gary Dale Miller, 70, of Story City, passed away of natural causes on Wednesday, January 4, 2017, at Bethany Manor.
He was born on March 21, 1946 in Eldora, Iowa, son of George H. Miller and Hattie (Daniels) Miller. He graduated from Ackley-Geneva High School in 1964 and entered the U.S. Air Force that fall.
Gary was united in marriage with Sheryl Linda Meyer on November 12, 1965, at West Friesland Presbyterian Church in rural Ackley. They made their first home in Ogden, Utah near Hill Air Force Base. Later residences included Cedar Rapids, Ames, and Huxley.
After being discharged from the U.S. Air Force in 1968, he worked for Rockwell Collins. In 1971, Gary started working for Clyde Black & Son Seed Farms in Ames where he remained for more than 30 years. He continued in the seed business at Iowa Acres and Blue River Hybrids.
Gary was a member of Garden Prairie United Church of Christ. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, and especially spending time with his grandsons and family.
He is survived by his son Gene Miller of Ventura; daughter Shanon (Jeremy) McKinley of Story City; grandsons Dylan McKinley and Jack Miller; sisters-in-law Joyce Meyer of Dumont and Wanda (Carl) Benning of Waverly; honorary grandchildren Carissa, Lucas, and Carli and their aunt Bonnie Benbow-Moreland; and several nieces and nephews.
Gary was preceded in death by his infant brother Richard, his parents, his wife Sheryl, brother-in-law Dennis Meyer, and significant other Joyce Bunning.
Visitation will be held Sunday, January 8th, from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at Grandon Funeral and Cremation Care, 414 Lincoln Way, Ames, Iowa. Funeral services will be on Monday, January 9th, at 10:30 a.m. at Harvest Evangelical Free Church in Story City, with graveside service at 2:00 p.m. at West Friesland Presbyterian Church cemetery in Ackley.
