OBITUARY

DEATH OF BENTON CORRINGTON

Benton Corrington, long well-known resident of Nevada and of Story county, died on Friday morning last at Peoria, Illinois,, and his funeral will be conducted from the Presbyterian church here Wednesday at two o'clock. Mr. Corrington's illness was not known here, and the news of his death came with surprise. His home here was broken up about two years ago by the death of Mrs. Corrington, and since last April he had been living at his old home in Peoria. Mr. Corrington was around seventy years of age, and he came to Story county from Illinois in 1874, settling on the farm in Grant township, where he lived until his removal to Nevada. Mr. Corrington served about two years in a Illinois regiment during the civil war, and his burial will be with the honors of the Grand Army. He had no children and very few near relatives. We hope to give further details of his life later.

The recent death of Ben Corrington brings to mind the cyclone that destroyed Grinnell several years ago. It will be remembered that the cyclone passed a few miles south of Nevada, and in its course was the home of Mr. and Mrs. Corrington. They had just finished a new house and had come to Nevada that day to buy new furniture for this home, and took dinner with Mr. and Mrs. Lockridge. Many will remember the extreme heat and sultry conditions of that Saturday afternoon. The wind made a complete circuit, shifting from south to west, north, east and back to southwest. On account of threatening rain, the Corringtons left the more costly furniture and took only such articles home as were most needed. Soon after reaching home, that awful cyclone approached from the west, and with its passing went the new home of Mr. and Mrs. Corrington. Both were blown away and found themselves out in the field, not seriously hurt but covered with mud and slush, after the storm passed over.
