From Ryan Funeral Home obituary, Nevada, Story County, Iowa:
Steven “Durb” Durby, age 62, of Cambridge, Iowa, died at his home on Monday, December 12, 2016.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, December 16, 2016, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 914 NW Ash Drive, in Ankeny, Iowa, with Pastor Lisa D. Parker officiating. Burial with military honors will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday in the Cambridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Ryan Funeral Home in Nevada on Thursday from 5-7 p.m.
Born June 4, 1954, in Ames, Iowa, Steven Sigurd Durby was the son of Sigurd “Junior” and Hazel “Harriett” (Warner) Durby. Steve lived with his family mainly in the Story County area, and also for a time in Minnesota and Florida. He served in the United States Marines Corps for four years.
Steve’s experience building grain elevators throughout Iowa led to employment as foreman and Sergeant of Arms for Ironworkers Local 67, from which he retired in 2009.
Steve will be remembered for his friendly, larger-than-life personality. His booming voice and love of music often converged to transform words into song. Steve was a very hands-on dad who refused to accept failure as an option. He loved golfing, playing fantasy football and fantasy golf, and was a huge supporter of the Iowa lottery. In retirement, Steve volunteered at the food pantry and discovered a love of gardening.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra; four children, Joseph (Sommer) Durby of Ankeny, Michael (Robin) Durby of Winterset, Erika (Matthew Loomis) Durby of Ellsworth, and Chelsey (C.J.) Schreiber of Altoona; six grandchildren, Jada, Lucas, Hailey, Gage, Livity, and Joseph; two brothers, Brad (Christy) Durby of South Carolina, and Randy (Barb) Durby of North Carolina; a sister, Toni Durby of Nebraska; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William Durby.
Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada has been entrusted with the care of Steven and his family.
