Obituary From Adams Soderstrum Funeral Home, Story County, Iowa.

Michel Y. Carr, 56, of Ames, Iowa, died tragically on Saturday, December 10, 2016, when he tried to save his dog who broke through the ice at Don Williams Lake near Boone, Iowa.

Michel “Miche” was born February 6, 1960, to William and Eliane (Dufour) Carr in Abington, PA. He graduated from Upper Moreland High School in Willow Grove, PA. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees from the University of Delaware, where he was also in the University Marching Band and a rock band. He was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Georgia in Immunology. Miche worked in the poultry industry and later in the animal biologics industry in Maryland. In 1998 he accepted a position with the Center for Veterinary Biologics of the USDA in Ames, Iowa. He worked with the Policy, Evaluation, and Licensing section, licensing animal vaccines and diagnostic kits. He was a Section Leader for many years. Miche’s colleagues enjoyed working with him; he had the perfect combination of intelligence, common sense, and humor.

Miche was an avid outdoorsman; he loved spending time with his Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, going hunting, hiking, and camping. He and his Chessies participated in dog shows all over the country, including the American Chesapeake Club National Specialty Show, competing in the breed ring. When travelling to these shows, he and his dogs would camp along the way.

While Miche lived in Iowa, he became a licensed pilot. He acquired a Cessna 172 Skyhawk. He was an active member of the Boone Area Pilots Association, with whom he volunteered for the Farm Progress Show. One of his favorite activities was flying to different cities and visiting historic sites and museums, especially aviation related. He also liked taking pictures while flying, and in 2014 he won an award for one of his photos.

Miche loved all animals, and had a menagerie on his acreage outside Ames, including several sheep; his Chessies, “Scooter and Bart”; a cat, named “The Cat”; and a visiting miniature horse that stayed for months. He would bring lambs into his house and take care of them when needed. One lamb, “Lambie,” was confused about what species she was, and preferred the house to the barn and pasture.

Michel is survived by his mother, Eliane Carr of Willow Grove, PA; his brother Laurent (Corinne) Carr and their son Frederic of Chaneaz, Switzerland; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his father, William Carr.
