Mr. James Harding Olinger
December 10, 1929 - November 29, 2016
Ankeny, IowaJames was born on December 10th, 1929 to James A, and Gladys Olinger in Des Moines, Iowa. After living in Maxwell, Iowa for 5 years, the family moved to Nevada, Iowa where Jim grew up and graduated from Nevada High School. He attended Simpson College for three years, and then served in the United States Air Force for two years.
Jim married Barbara Head from Harlan, Iowa on June 22nd, 1952. Together they raised 3 sons, Jeffrey, David, and Steven. They moved to Ankeny in 1953 and still reside there.
Jim retired from the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company in 1986 as a Data Processing Manager after 33 years of service. He was a past President of the Ankeny Kiwanis Club, President of the Firestone Salaried Credit Union, and served on the Governor's Economy Committee. He was a 63 year member of the United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and was also a member of the Wesley Singers.
Jim enjoyed traveling, dancing, golfing, playing cards, and being with his family and friends, both here in Ankeny, and in St. Petersburg, Florida where he and his wife Barbara spent 25 winters.
He is preceded in death by his parents James A, and Gladys Olinger. Survived by his wife of 64 years Barbara, sons Jeffrey (Ellen) of Des Moines, David of Ankeny, Steven (Leigh) of Ankeny, and grandchildren Andrew (Ft. Collins, Co.), Aaron of Des Moines, Michelle, Nicholas, Jason, and Bradley of Ankeny. Also sister-in-law Nancy Scharf of Ft. Dodge, IA and sister-in-law Phyllis Head from Monticello, IA, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Memorial Services will be held at Ankeny First United Methodist Church, 206 SW. Walnut St. Ankeny, IA 50023 on Tuesday December 6, 2016.
Visitation will be at 10:00 AM with services to follow at 11:00 AM.In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ankeny First United Methodist Church or to the Alzheimer's Association.
