Martin E. "Smoke" Meyers, 79, was born February 24, 1937, in Maxwell to Keith “Ike” and Zenda (Pearson) Meyers.
Martin graduated from Maxwell High School in 1955, marrying Annabelle (“Belle”) E. Morgan his high school sweetheart, on November 5, 1955. After serving his country in the US Army, he returned to Maxwell, working at John Deere, Des Moines Works in Ankeny for 30 years before retiring to the Meyers family farm.
Martin loved the annual Old Settlers Picnic. He was proud to be the Grand Marshall and to have the Meyers farm displayed in the Old Settlers mural on the bandstand. Martin tirelessly collected historical advertisements featuring the town of Maxwell, local events, and businesses and contributed many of his treasures to the Maxwell Museum. Martin was a lifelong member and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church of Maxwell.
Survivors include his sister, Diana Montgomery (Jack Montgomery), Weyauwega, WI; three children: Gregory (Mary Fitzpatrick) of Hartland, WI, Lesli Kraiger (Charles Kraiger III), Fairfax, VA, David Meyers of Chandler, AZ; grandchildren: Sydney, Isabel, Lydia, Sylvia, Owen, Katherine, Remington and Emery Rose. Martin enjoyed a close-knit group of cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews; and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 44 years.
Visitation will be 3-5 p.m. Saturday, November 26, at Rasmusson-Bacon Funeral Home in Maxwell. Memorial services will be 1 p.m. Sunday, November 27, at the Maxwell Presbyterian Church in Maxwell with Reverend Ian McMullen officiating. Private burial of cremated remains will be at the Maxwell Cemetery in Maxwell.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Maxwell Presbyterian Church.
