Obituary for Richard Alan Staples

Richard A. Staples, 87, of Jewell died at home in his garden the evening of November 1, 2016.
Richard was born at Webster City Hospital on April 23, 1929. He was the eighth of eleven children born to Charles Henry Marshall and Mabelle Mary (Clair) Staples.

Richard graduated from Jewell High school with the class of 1949. Richard received an honorable discharge after serving 21 months in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a valuable worker wherever he was employed. His work experience included helping farmers, working for the railroad, HyLine Chicks, Morton Pie factory, Ellsworth Co-op, Hawkeye Mink Plant, and a press operator for Frigidaire. Richard had been retired for 25 years.

Richard was united in marriage to his dance partner, Doris Emma Mae Kreutner on August 22, 1954 at St. Paul’s Lutheran church in rural Boone. They danced (mostly polkas) for their entire relationship. Richard enjoyed planting and harvesting the garden, fruit, and berries; nurturing and sharing amaryllis bulbs, all of nature, playing cards, and cows. Faith, family, and friends were the most important things in Richard’s life.

Richard is survived by Doris, his wife of 62 years and five children. Gina (Alan) Spohnheimer of Ames, Kendra (Dan) Owen of Waukee, Alan (Judy) Staples of New Providence, Daniel (Kerry) Staples of Winterset, and Herschel Staples of Randall. Richard is survived by 11 grandchildren (Sara, Wayne, Kent, Lyndsy, Laura, Jada, Alyx, Tegan, Kelsey, Tasha, and Aubrey), 10 great-grandchildren (Victor, Claire, Kate, Vincent, Anthony, Palma, Patricia, Luke, Landon, and Cameron), 2 step great-grandchildren (Connor and Ally). Richard is also survived by one brother Kenneth Staples of Webster City, two sisters, Emma Lou Kerns of Apache Junction AZ, and Mabelle (Wayne) Romp of Stanhope, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings; Clarice, Lester, George, Charles, Florence, Donna Mae, and Russel.

A celebration of Richard’s life was held on Saturday, November 5 at Bethesda Lutheran church in Jewell. Burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell.
