THIRD IOWA VETERAN GONE

Jos. H. Miller of Spokane.

Joseph Henry Miller, who was pioneer youth in this county and a soldier from Story county through four years of the civil war and later became the stop-father of J. W. Hague of Nevada township, died February 14 at his home in Spokane, Washington. Mr. Miller was born in Carroll county, Ohio January 17, 1838, and he came to Story county with his mother, who was widow, in the pioneer days. Their home was on what has recently been known as the Kulow farm near the center of Nevada township; and it was thence that he went to war with Company E of the Third Iowa at the first call to arms. He served with that regiment until it was virtually put out of existence at Atlanta, and then he continued with Company A of the Second, with which the remnants of the Third were consolidated. He went through the great campaigns of his command from Shiloh to Sherman's march through Georgia and the Carolinas. Soon after his return from the war he was married to Matilda J. (Ramsay) widow of Isaac Hague, September 27, 1865. In 1872 he migrated to Oregon and ten years later to Washington in the vicinity of Spokane, where he continued to reside until his removal to that city. In 1904 Mr. and Mrs. Miller made quite an extended visit at the Hague home and with numerous old friends in this part of the country and he renewed fellowship with his surviving comrades and was met by many of the younger generation around here. Mr. Miller was a man of much worth and was highly esteemed. He is survived by his widow, his step-son J. W. Hague, two sons and two married daughters, all four of the children being residents in or near Spokane and one of the sons, Clyde A., being new a member of the Washington legislature.
